Migrating to AWS Cloud-Native for Volkswagen Group Italia

Transitioning to a modern architecture that consolidates group Business Intelligence and optimizes operational costs

The group

Volkswagen Group Italia (VGI) is the official importer in Italy for six brands: Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, CUPRA, Škoda, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The company operates through an extensive network of dealerships and Service Partners, offering vehicles, spare parts, accessories, and specialized assistance.

The company's primary focus is customer satisfaction, combined with a strong commitment to economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

How SDG helped VGI

To address new business challenges and optimize technological efficiency, VGI needed to evolve its data management, overcoming the limitations of a fragmented and inflexible infrastructure.

SDG Group supported them throughout this modernization journey, guiding the migration of the entire ecosystem to an AWS cloud-native architecture.

The result? We converted fixed costs into a pay-per-use model, created a single source of truth (Amazon Athena) for all self-service BI on Power BI, and automated the ingestion of over 900 daily files. All of this was achieved in a parallel-run setup, without ever disrupting company operations.

Project Challenges

Our analysis of the infrastructure revealed several structural inefficiencies impacting business performance. These included:

VGI Success Story

High Costs

The previous system had reached the end of its life cycle. Maintaining that infrastructure consumed the budget in licensing and maintenance fees, effectively blocking investments in innovation.

data-loss (1)

Siloed Data

Each department had its own version of the "truth." Customer information was trapped in isolated silos with layered calculation rules, making it impossible to get a clear and reliable 360-degree view.

latency

Latency and GDPR

Relying on the previous day's data was no longer enough; the CRM needed real-time updates. Additionally, automated routines were required to safely manage GDPR compliance and the Right to Be Forgotten.

The Solution
The answer is "NewBI"—an AWS architecture that scales automatically, charges only for the resources used, and never slows down. We decommissioned the legacy system and built the following:

Serverless Integration

We created an S3 Data Lake with over 2,500 tables. Services like SQS, Lambda, and AWS Glue process more than 900 files daily completely autonomously and without bottlenecks.

Golden Record and Real-Time Data

An MDM module cleanses customer records to ensure GDPR compliance. At the same time, dedicated APIs feed the group's CRM in near real-time, eliminating latency.

A Single Source of Truth for BI
Amazon Athena serves as the centralized query engine. Today, all reporting across sales, aftersales, marketing, logistics, and finance runs on a single, harmonized standard for the entire Group: Microsoft Power BI.
