SDG as niche players on the BI & PM arena has the duty of learning, reading and being at the top of innovation. Just a couple of months ago, I received a very interesting report from Forrester, “The future of BI”. I sincerely agree with the content of the document.
Basically explains that Business Users are demanding more control over BI applications, as IT is losing its once-exclusive control over BI platforms, tools and applications, as traditional BI approaches often fall short:
- BI hasn’t fully empowered information workers who still largely depend on IT. This impacts on information workers who have no choice to make business decisions quickly and efficient.
- Corporate BI platforms are not agile enough as are based on relational or multidimensional models with long resolution times.
BI trends for the future
- A purely standard-based approach for addressing business requirements is neither flexible nor agile enough to react or adapt ever-changing information requirements. Agile BI-tools like based in flexible in-memory models in addition to enterprise BI models is key trend for the future.
- Multiple BI tool strategy that has been spreading in the last 10 years is going to stay with us for the coming years.
- Information workers will demand more BI control to reduce the time between they make request and the fulfillment of that need.
- BI tools that support the right amount of users self-service will become popular, as the need of reducing time to respond business needs becomes critical.
- Mobility is key to succeed in BI becoming the new BI mantra. Information workers cannot wait to arrive to the office to make decisions. Real-time is important to achieve excellence at decision making.
- Cloud BI solutions remain immature, although interest in “as a service” solutions exists specially to reduce initial investment costand also to lessen the burden of internal IT standards and resources.
- BI-specific DBMS will gain popularity; response-time and flexibility of business requirements are key levers to become agile.
- Techniques and technologies that make handling data at extreme scales is becoming affordable, “big data” will move out from silos and getting into Enterprise IT.
